ORACY

About Oracy

In school, oracy is a powerful tool for learning; by teaching students to become more effective speakers and listeners we empower them to better understand themselves, each other and the world around them. It is also a route to social mobility, empowering all students, not just some, to find their voice to succeed in school and life. “ Voice21

At Childwall Valley, we recognise the importance of developing students’ speaking and communication skills to support their learning, raise achievement in all areas of the curriculum and develop pupils’ confidence, articulacy and independence. We are also aware that effective communication is vital to improving the life outcomes of pupils classed as disadvantaged. This year we will be transforming our teaching & learning through talk. Our aim is to develop our students’ confidence, articulacy and capacity to learn. To do this, Mrs Evans our Oracy Lead, will work with all staff to transform our teaching and learning environment, achieving a high-quality oracy education for those who need it most. We will achieve this by implementing the Voice21 Oracy Framework and assessment tool and training all of our teachers to boost the spoken language skills of all our pupils.

'Voice Liverpool' success

“We’re excited by the prospect of so many Liverpool children experiencing the benefits of an oracy-rich education and the long-term impact on how schools work with their students across the region.”

Helen Rafferty, CEO of partners in Voice Liverpool

The Oracy Framework

How we teach oracy and measure progress

The deliberate, explicit and systematic teaching of oracy across phases and throughout the curriculum supports our children to make progress in the four strands of oracy outlined in the Oracy Framework.

The Oracy Framework will also be used as a basis of formative assessment, enabling us to gauge what our children have or have not yet grasped and informing us what to teach next.
